Plage de l’Escalet: Saint Tropez’s hidden gem

The wild and remote Plage de l’Escalet is one of Saint Tropez’s best kept secrets which we at St Tropez House are delighted to share with our clients renting a villa in Saint Tropez.

L’Escalet: rocky beach with stunning views

This delightful beach, just six miles from the glamorous and up-market resort of Saint Tropez, is hidden down a bumpy unpaved road with little in the way of signposting and is a million miles from the trendy beach club culture of nearby Pampelonne.

Intrepid visitors are unable to see much over the gorse bushes and hedgerows which line the uneven path until they turn the corner and catch a glimpse of the breath-taking coastline below. The area boasts some of the most unspoilt vistas anywhere along the Cote d’Azur – as well as being home to a number of our most exclusive and secluded villas in St Tropez.

Situated on the south side of Cap Camarat, the first beach visitors will come to is a small half-sand, half-pebble beach which, despite its remoteness, has all the required facilities such as toilets, showers and a lifeguard. There are also a couple of snack bars where you can buy food and drink.

However, we recommend that adventurous clients staying in a St Tropez House villa follow the path leading southwards from the main beach, to access a number of sandy coves and intimate bays further along the coast.

But as you walk, do not be surprised if you see a number of naked bodies sunbathing on the rocks below. The area is hugely popular with nudists, who flock to its beaches each summer.

The azure-blue waters off Plage de l’Escalet are also very popular with those on yachts, with many luxury yacht charters choosing to anchor in the small bays for the day so their guests can enjoy some peace and quiet before heading back to the hustle and bustle of Saint Tropez.

The area around Escalet is protected, and belongs to the Conservatoire National du Littoral. Created in 1975, the organization akin to the British National Trust protects unique environmental zones along the French coast.
