Les Journées du Patrimoine – or heritage days – is an annual weekend of culture in France which offers those staying in one of our St Tropez House villas a magical window onto France’s colourful heritage.

The eagerly-anticipated event, which will this year take place on September 14th and 15th at thousands of venues across the country including a large number in Saint Tropez itself,  was initiated in 1984 by the then Minister of  Culture Jack Lang.

Monsieur Long intended for the weekend of cultural events to give the people of France open access to the country’s most cherished heritage.

His initiative was a huge success and each year, les Journées du Patrimonie have gathered momentum up and down the country. Last year, for example, approximately 12 million visitors used the days to discover or rediscover the cultural riches of France.

The heritage days have also surpassed the borders of France and now take place in most European countries across Europe. Each year there is a theme for the weekend and this year’s Journées du Patrimoine will celebrate ‘1913-2013 Cents Ans de Protection’.

The programme for this year’s festival has not yet been announced, but last year, more than 7,000 people took part in the weekend, visiting a host of venues in Saint Tropez, where most of our exclusive luxury villas are located.

Amongst the favourite exhibits in September 2013 was the Citadelle, which dominates the picture perfect town on the French Riviera, as well as the chapels of Sainte-Anne and Miséricorde.

Also hugely popular last year were tours of the Chateau de La Moutte, which is situated just outside Saint Tropez near our villas to rent in Les Canebiers, as well as visits to La Treille Muscate in the gardens of the Maison de Colette.
