The Giraglia Rolex Cup, one of the most eagerly anticipated sailing events of the year, is about to return to the shores of Saint Tropez.
The week-long regatta, which sees sailors initially race from San Remo in Italy to Saint Tropez within view of some of our waterfront villas to rent, will take place between June 14th and 22nd.
After their arrival in the port of Saint Tropez the teams then take part in three days of inshore racing before the start of the main event, which takes place this year on Wednesday June 19th.
The principal race starts in Saint-Tropez, home to our portfolio of exclusive waterfront villas to rent, before heading through the Iles d’Hyères and around a rocky islet off northern Corsica which is called the Giraglia, after which the race is named. The fleet of yachts then race to the finish, in Genoa, Italy.
The exciting event, a favorite with clients returning to St Tropez House villas, is sponsored by the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez and the Yacht Club Italiano as well luxury global brand Rolex watches, which has been involved in the race since 1998.
The first Giraglia Cup was held in 1953, and regularly features up to 200 yachts which battle it out under sail for 243 nautical miles to compete for the Rolex Challenge Trophy. Past Giraglia Rolex Cup winners include the Esimit Europa 2, captained by German Olympic sailor and America’s Cup winner Jochen Schümann and Foxy Lady captained by brothers Dominique and Michel Heyraud, from France.
The ambiance during the week-long race is infectious, and undoubtedly the best place to watch the cup is aboard a boat. However, if you do not have the keys to a luxury yacht during June the best alternative is from the terrace of your St Tropez House villa with seaviews.
