An antiques market not to miss: Jas des Roberts Saint Tropez

The French love a good vide grenier which literally means ‘empty attic’. And if you choose to rent a house in St Tropez this autumn, you will be spoiled for choice as to where to go to unearth some must-have antiques.

One of the most colourful antiques markets in the Saint Tropez area is the Jas des Roberts, a vide grenier or brocante held in the car park of a Saint Tropez restaurant of the same name, a short drive from the centre of Grimaud and a stone’s throw from some of our villas to rent in St Tropez.

The weekly antiques market of Jas des Roberts, which takes place every Sunday from the crack of dawn to around 1pm, is a veritable Aladdin’s Cave full of mystery with some great bargains to be had. Even in the midst of winter, the numbers of bargain hunters that flock to the vide grenier  is staggering, and it’s definitely best to arrive early to assure quality pickings.

The market, hugely popular with locals as well as visitors is a particularly good place to go to buy art, furniture and vintage clothes. And while some stalls are literally open suitcases, others are set up like rooms in a stately home with plants used as walls.

And when the bargain hunters have had enough of picking through the wares, there is the Jas des Roberts restaurant on hand to provide first class refreshment.

The simple restaurant has a convivial courtyard where diners can eat, and a homely yet excellent menu littered with Provencal specialities.

It is open during the summer months every evening, and from September through to June every lunchtime, as well as Friday and Saturday evenings. It is advisable to reserve a table on Friday nights as it is music night with live bands appearing most weeks.
