Three British mountaineers were among nine people swept to their deaths by a devastating avalanche in the French Alps apparently triggered by a climber dislodging a slab of ice.
The first to be named was British guide Roger Payne, 55. Two more British victims have been named by the Foreign Office as John Taylor and Steve Barber. They were raising money for a hospice on the climb. The accident happened on Mont Maudit, a peak near Mont Blanc.
